Student Work

Assignments require students to:
  • organize, interpret, analyze, synthesize, and
    evaluate information rather than reproduce it;
  • draw conclusions, make generalizations, and
    produce arguments that are supported through
    extended writing; and
  • connect what they are learning to experiences,
    observations, feelings, or situations significant in
    their daily lives both inside and outside of
    school.

Real World Math Adventure - Math at the Mall is an interactive site where students can practice
percentages while shopping at a virtual mall.

Math by Design- An interactive site that encourages students to problem solve and think
critically as they encounter unique geometry and measurement challenges. Students are
introduced to the TRC Architectural firm as junior architects who are commissioned to build
environments by working through a series of mathematical tasks.

Maps Home Page - Interactive site that helps students understand reading a map, finding
distances, latitude and longitude, contour maps, etc.

Real World Math - Lesson plans on using Google Earth in the mathematics classroom,
includes tutorials.

The Futures Channel- The Futures Channel partners with schools around the country as well
as a wide range of publishers, science centers, professional development service providers,
public television stations, websites and more to provide high quality real world digital content to enhance their education.

CNN Student News -
CNN Student News is a ten-minute, commercial-free, daily news program for middle and high school students produced by the journalists and educators at CNN.

The Big Picture- A photo blog where entries are posted every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The Big Picture is intended to highlight high-quality, amazing imagery, with a focus on current events.

Vernier Probes and Sensors- organizing real world science and math data for students to interpret, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate.

Assessment

Assessment Plans:
  • are aligned with state content standards;
  • have clear measurement criteria;
  • measure student performance in more than three
    ways (e.g., in the form of a project, experiment,
    presentation, essay, short answer, or multiple choice test;
  • require extended written tasks;
  • are portfolio-based with clear illustrations of
    student progress toward state content standards; and
  • include descriptions of how assessment results
    will be used to inform future instruction.

Formative Assessment Techniques - A list of formative assessment techniques from Highland
Park Middle School. Even though this is a middle school website many of these techniques work
for elementary and high school students also.
